Parapark - Sunday Island
Conservation is alive and well
Para Park is situated in picturesque Corner Inlet, South Gippsland
approximately 4 kilometers offshore from Port Albert.
It is owned by the Para Park Cooperative Game Reserve Limited, an
organisation originally set up in 1965 when a group of enthusiastic
hunters /conservationists saw the opportunity to purchase the island
and set up a unique wildlife conservation project aimed specifically at
the Hog Deer or Para deer (axis porcinus).
The island is approximately 8 kilometers long and 3 kilometers wide,
nestled within the Nooramunga Coastal Reserve. Access is by boat
from Port Albert taking approximately 15 minutes depending on the
status of the tides and the weather. The cooperative share holders
regularly make the trip using their own boats, or the cooperative
owned "Yimbala" an 8 metre ex fishing boat captained by a local
fisherman on behalf of the shareholders to attend working bees or just
relax on their own island hideaway.
